Competition entry for an improved ferry terminal and welcome point on Easdale Island, Argyll.
The existing ferryman’s office is the anchor of the scheme. Retained in its existing form and appearance, it proudly holds the history and identity of the island.
A small, gable-ended volume of matching scale but contrasting timber cladding and modern, clipped eaves is added to its southern end to house the staff drying room, WC and shower.
To its west, a monolithic stacked slate wall wraps one end of a long, low, rectilinear volume – its form and contrast between heavy stone and lightweight timber being reminiscent of historical black houses. Though, an asymmetric winged roof, brightly coloured accent materials derived from fishing paraphernalia, crisp edges and playful elevations generate a youthful and modern character.
A direct and intuitive thoroughfare from the slipway passes through the new building and into the “village green” where visitors can experience the warm welcome of the island.
At the far north end is the waiting room, with panoramic views over the harbour and across the slipway to Ellenabeich. A peaceful space of warmth and shelter with rich plywood lined walls for contemplation of the journey ahead, to orient upon arrival on the island, or simply to marvel at the island scenery or shelter from west coast winds.
